As Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg are under fire after revelation of Cambridge Analytics, more troubles arise for Facebook.
Facebook has a shadow profile of you
Another day, another controversy coming up from the Silicon Valley. This time it is again Facebook that is struggling with Cambridge Analytica over data stealing of more than 80 million accounts. The Chairman and CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg has been answering boundless questions in front of the American Senate and Congress.
To avoid from your data being compromised by Cambridge Analytica, the tip was said to not be on Facebook, but even if you are not on facebook, then the social media network has it all sorted out for you.
The question came from Ben Lujan; a Democrat from New Mexico, among other questions asked, this one has surely raised an eye towards facebook's algorithms that not only collect your data from the website, but also collect the calling records on your phone, and the web data that is scattered OUTSIDE facebook. SO even if you have not been using facebook, they still have your data. The examples include the consumer data that a broker sold to a company, your actions on other websites, pulling your data from your friend's contact lists who are on facebook, even if you are not facebook.
Sounds creepy, doesnt it?
"It may surprise you that, on Facebook's page, when you go to 'I dont have a facebook account' and would like to request all my personal data stored by Facebook,' it takes you to a form that says go to your Facebook page, and then, on your account settings, you can download your data," - Lujan said.
As per facebook, the data collection was to help facebook in getting you a better bunch of friends
And also to illegally provide the data to change the political scenario of a country? you never know.
"When people upload their contact lists or address books to Facebook,
we try to match that data with the contact information of other people
on Facebook in order to generate friend recommendations," - Facebook spokesperson
This also means that facebook has created consent issues, as they took your data from a friend of yours who had given the permission to the app, but they do not have your consent, while having your data.
Now securing your privacy is tougher than ever, even if you do not use the internet, it still wont guarantee that your data is not being extracted. You may have to maintain fake contact details and whereabouts to ensure privacy. Using a VPN whenever possible is also a good idea, and so is turning off your GPS. We are living in a world where websites are controlling and exploiting the user's data without their consent, that makes precautions necessary. But at least, take the first step by avoiding facebook.
In the end: The internet is dark and full of terror. Majorly thanks to Facebook and Mark Zuckerberg.
